The Pharaoh Hound is among the oldest of domestic dogs to ever be recorded. He dates back to ancient Egypt in 3000 B.C. The Phoenicians brought him to Gozo and Malta from Egypt when they settled there and he’s now Malta’s national dog. He’s an ideal lure and hunting dog for rabbits, is extremely fast and very obedient.

One unique feature is that if he’s excited or happy, his ears and nose turn a deep rose red colour (like a blush.) His coat colour can vary from red golden to chestnut to tan and he can have white marks on his tail’s tip, toes, chest and the centre line of his face. He’s intelligent, friendly and athletic. He needs daily exercise in a fenced area because his keen hunting sense may entice him to chase small animals. His glossy short coat doesn’t need much maintenance. He’s 21 – 25 inches in height.
